Culture is a word people use when they cannot name the habit. Most of the time the habit is one of these three, done wrong.
Praise in public
Praise is a broadcast. When you name what someone did well in front of the team, you are not just rewarding one person. You are showing everyone else what the standard looks like in a human being. Be specific. Not great job. Say the thing: she asked three questions before she presented anything, and you could hear the customer relax.
Coach in private
Correction is a conversation. Do it in front of the team and the person stops listening to the point and starts managing their face. Do it alone, same day, one thing, and run the moment again. The team will know it happened. They do not need to watch it.
Decide in writing
This is the one most leaders skip. A decision that lives in a conversation gets remembered three different ways by three different people. A decision in writing, even two lines in a shared note, is the same for everyone. What we decided, why, and when we will look at it again.
Writing it down also forces you to actually decide. It is easy to leave a meeting feeling aligned. It is harder to write one sentence everyone agrees is what was said.
Why these three
Public praise sets the standard. Private coaching protects the person while raising them to it. Written decisions keep the leaders consistent with each other so the floor is not getting three versions of the same rule. Do those three for ninety days and most of what people call culture takes care of itself.
You do not need a values wall. You need to be predictable in the three moments people are watching.
